Where the status lives
Most lenders give you one or more of a self-service portal showing the current stage, a named contact who can tell you where the file sits, and automated emails at key milestones such as receipt, document requests and decision. Note which channels your lender offers at the outset so you know where to look.
Reading the signals
No news usually means the file is progressing or waiting on you. If you have connected bank data and sent your documents, the ball is with the underwriter; if there is a gap, expect a query. The post-submission walkthrough maps what each stage means.
When and how to chase
Give the process the quoted time before chasing — a same-day call the morning after you apply rarely helps. Once a window passes, contact your named person, reference your application number, and ask specifically whether anything is outstanding. Keeping the checklist to hand means you can clear any query on the spot.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I check in?
Once per quoted window is plenty. Daily calls do not speed underwriting and can slow your contact down. Respond instantly to their queries, though — that is what actually moves the file.
What if there is no portal or contact?
Rely on the confirmation email, which usually names a reference and a route to reply. If a lender offers no way to check progress at all, that is worth weighing against more transparent alternatives.
