How it works
How do I check my business credit score in the UK. Business credit scores in the UK are maintained by agencies such as Experian, Equifax and Creditsafe. They compile data from Companies House filings, payment behaviour reported by lenders and suppliers, and any county court judgments or insolvency events.
Your company's score is separate from your personal credit score, though some lenders look at both. Understanding what goes into the score — and what you can influence — is the first step to improving your borrowing position.
What affects the score
The most impactful factors are: whether your company pays its obligations on time, the length of your trading history, the ratio of debt to turnover, and any adverse records (CCJs, late filings at Companies House, winding-up petitions).
Some factors are within your control. Filing accounts on time at Companies House, keeping credit utilisation reasonable, and ensuring suppliers who report payment data see you as a reliable payer all help.
Other factors are harder to change quickly. A short trading history, for example, improves only with time. But lenders who specialise in newer companies may weight other signals — such as bank statement analysis — more heavily.
What lenders actually do
Not all lenders rely solely on credit scores. Some — including Credicorp — combine credit bureau data with a direct review of your company's bank statements (via open banking) to get a fuller picture of trading performance.
This means a below-average credit score is not necessarily a bar to borrowing. If your bank statements show regular income and responsible cash management, a lender may still approve your application.
Practical steps
Check your company's credit report before applying. You can do this through Experian Business, Creditsafe, or similar services. Fix any errors (wrong address, outdated director information) before lenders see them.
If your score is lower than you expected, focus on the things you can change: file your accounts on time, reduce outstanding debts where possible, and ensure your registered details at Companies House are current and accurate.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a personal guarantee?
Not with all lenders. Credicorp lends to the company itself and does not require a personal guarantee. Other lenders may require one, particularly for larger amounts or longer terms. Always check before you apply.
Is business loan interest tax deductible?
Loan interest on genuine business borrowing is normally an allowable expense for corporation tax purposes. Speak to your accountant to confirm for your specific situation.
What happens if I cannot repay on time?
Contact your lender as early as possible. Responsible lenders will discuss options such as a short extension or revised repayment plan. Late fees may apply, and persistent non-payment can affect your company's credit rating.
