Where the reference comes from
When you submit, most lenders issue a unique application or case reference, usually in the confirmation email and often visible in any online portal. It is the single tag that ties together your details, documents, searches and correspondence.
Why it matters
Quote the reference and whoever you speak to can find your file in seconds rather than asking you to re-identify the company and start again. It is the fastest way to check progress, respond to a query, or chase after a quoted window passes. Save it somewhere you can find under pressure.
If you lose it
Search your inbox for the confirmation email, check the portal, or call and identify the company and applicant so the lender can locate the case. Keep the reference with your application checklist so it and your documents live together. After drawdown you will typically get a separate loan account number for repayments.
Frequently asked questions
Is the application reference the same as my loan account number?
No. The application reference tracks the case while it is being assessed; once funded you usually receive a separate loan account number used for statements and repayments.
What if I never received a reference?
Check spam and the portal first. If there is genuinely none, contact the lender with the company name and applicant details so they can find and confirm your case.
